Children's Grief

Caring for a Survivng Child
Children need to feel that the death is an open subject and that they can express their thoughts or questions as they arise. As in all situations, honesty is the best way to talk with children. Talk to the child in a language that he or she can understand. Remember to listen to the child and try to understand what the child is saying and, just as importantly, what they are not saying.
Explanations that may Not Help
Children tend to be very literal. Simple but dishonest answers can only serve to increase the fear and uncertainty that the child is feeling.
How to help a Child Deal with Loss
There are many ways an adult can help a child through grief.
Where Do Children Fit In?
Excluding children from the visitation/funeral will delay their grieving and hinder their ability to deal with the death and loss later in life. There are practical ways that work well to include children.
Children at a Funeral
Many parents struggle with deciding whether or not to bring children to a funeral. All children need to learn to grieve and manage their feelings.
Resources
Grieving children need support, and there are resources to help.
